New House Speaker Mike Johnson may already be losing his first big clash with the hard-right lawmakers who are making the Republican majority and the nation ungovernable as time races down to yet another federal funding cut-off.

Maybe a better metaphor is irradiated paint on a turd. Kills the bacteria in the GOP turd so as to nominally make eating it less sickening, but the truth is that the irradiated rightist paint is quite a lot more cancerous in the end and there are election antibiotics to get rid of pathogenic GOP bacteria contracted from the turd but if the rightist cancer metastasizes then you’re too far gone for treatment because you’ve lost your democracy.
