News articles calling others “hardliners” compared to him is a good indication that just by making him speaker, the overton window has moved to the right.
If McCarthy hadn’t tried to provide himself cover from the fascist right by throwing Biden under the (bullshit) impeachment bus, Democrats might have prevented his ouster.
Another way of looking at it is he didn’t compromise enough.
