The truth lies in the actual quote. She’s only saying that they need a backup in case he gets arrested or goes completely senile.

Its more akin to, ‘our evil as shit old guy is getting a bit too old to keep doing all the evil shit we want, we need another younger fascist dictator in play’.

Sadly for her, the only younger fascist they had in play was a complete dud and the rest of them were even more laughable.

Yeah the thing is trump is and was laughable until he was sworn in. Americans love to flirt with fascism, especially males for some reason. And if they are not countered we will end up with trump again or someone even worse.

DeSantis went too hard on being a fascist too quickly. You have to trickle in the evilness to fool the republican voters.

I don’t think you have to fool Republicans in the voting for a fascist. They seem pretty comfortable with the concept.

Problem is I don’t think Trump will run a VP that’s a threat to him. Once they have a viable backup they’ll throw Trump away and let him go to prison or impeach him to pretend to have ethics. So desantis or Nikki Haley won’t be chosen.

      From the article :

While speaking to Beck, Kelly said she believed the Republican party needed to have an “undercard” in case Trump ends up jailed or unable to run due to his ongoing legal issues.

It’s interesting that you agree with a conservative commentator…

Yes, only stupid liberals would fall for agreeing with things like ‘if Trump isn’t the Republican frontrunner, someone else will be.’ What a gotcha you caught them in!

If you go look at old interviews of him from the '80s, he wasn’t ever necessarily smart, but at least he was coherent.

Yeah, I remember what he was like in the 80s. While I still wouldn’t call it mentally sharp, there does seem to have been a decline recently. Moreover, saying he isn’t as sharp as he once was doesn’t necessarily imply that he was all that sharp before. Perhaps I took a bit of a cheap shot.

I wouldn’t even say the decline was recent. Early as the 00s he clearly was losing his grip in reality and the ability to make coherent sentences.

Even at the start of his presidential run he basically sounded like what you get if you just press next on your phone keyboard autocomplete suggestions. Not sure if you can really say he got worse than that.

Yes, competency is up to the electorate, as it should be. Anything else is antidemocratic and a horrible idea.

Yes, competency is up to the electorate electoral college

You don’t get to argue what is or isn’t democratic when the system allows for the most-popular candidate to lose.

Sure I do, direct elections aren’t the only type available to representative democracies. Allowing an unelected member of the judicial branch to bar candidates from federal office is antidemocratic and (more importantly in this case) unconstitutional.

No you don’t, if you’re being honest. No system which allows itself to act against the will of its people can be said to democratic at the most basic definition of the word, regardless of which specific type of democracy it is.

Also it’s funny you talk about representative democracy, when the people who actually vote for the President- the electoral college- aren’t elected by voters.

the only reason the US was considered a democracy was because the electoral college tended to vote along popular lines anyway. If Trump wins again he won’t win the popular vote. Between the electoral college, the broken nature of the senate, and the gerrymandering of the house… its not a democracy now, for sure.

        • Here’s what’s interesting though. The constitution itself sets several rather arbitrary qualifications for the office of president, so clearly they didn’t think that limiting people’s choices by making some candidates illegal was anti-democratic. They decided that the will of the people could not be permitted if it were to elect someone too young, or foreign born. It is anti-democratic, but it’s also fully constitutional. The constitution was written by several people who were rather skeptical of democracy and sought to limit its influence.

“You know, I know some potatoes. The best potatoes. Beautiful potatoes, really. I really mean it. I am the best potato counter. Seriously. I know many professional potato counters, smart guys, and they say ask me how I can count potatoes so well. I tell them I don’t know! I know actually, I just am that naturally good. It isn’t hard for me. You know who is terrible at counting potatoes? Biden. He can’t count to potato with both hands. He just falls asleep. Ol’ Sleepy Joe, many call him, can’t count to potato. It’s sad. You know who can? Me. Just remember that when you step into the voting booth. He things you all are so dumb, but he can’t even count to potato. You all are so smart, such beautiful people, real Americans. I can count to potato and you can count on me.”
