In the healthcare industry, there’s discussion on whether accepting a free lunch or even a branded pen counts as bribery. But when the Supreme Court does it…
The people at the top don’t want the people under them competing with them for bribes. They want to make sure all gifts come directly to them.
Clarence Thomas’ sheer greed sparks fears he won’t resign.
Clarence Thomas’ Private Complaints About Money Sparked Hope He Would Resign
Oh yeah god fucking forbid he should have to scrape by on a salary several times higher than pretty much every person I know. The humanity!
I mean, the high salary seems like a perk, but the rest of us get to live with the potential of losing our job when the company has a bad quarter. That enriches my life in ways that a man who’s held lifetime appointments for 33 years will never understand.
Not to worry, you also have a chance of getting laid off when the company is posting record profits!
How dare you. Do you think it’s cheap to operate and maintain his luxury apartment on wheels?
More than anybody you know, but Justices are very underpaid compared what they could make in the private sector, essentially entry-level for “big law”
My fix would be to increase their salary to be beyond competitive, but pull out their fingernails if they accept so much as a free sample from Costco.
Plenty of government workers are underpaid in comparison to similar private sector jobs. If we’re going to start paying people what they’re worth, I say we start with teachers and get to lifetime judicial appointees when we get to 'em.
Yes, but that’s off topic
In the article they talk about how partners at law firms make $7mil, so yeah, seems like we’d want to pay the highest judge in the land at least as much as some rando firm.
At the same time, I think we should have universal basic income, universal health care and free higher education.
Just saying that strategically, the government should pay high value positions enough that they’re filled by quality candidates and aren’t as vulnerable to bribery.
The Supreme Court is not meant to be on the legal career progression path. It’s a public service position. One can bake in anti-bribery controls independent of pay scale.
Exactly. The perks are supposed to be that you’re on the fucking Supreme Court.
why do all “conservatives” end up being simple money grubbing pigs
Yeah, this sounds like he has a desperate need to be able to live the lifestyle of other high paid people around the Washington area instead of being content to live very comfortably on almost 300k a year.
So conservatives rushed in with a steady stream of gifts and perks to make Thomas wealthy so he’d stay and continue rubber stamping anything sent his way. It’s disgustingly corrupt.
Thomas wanted to make liberals’ lives miserable since the very beginning of his appointment. The liberals haven’t paid him to change his mind.
I believe you mis-spelled “blatantly”.
I can’t believe I have to keep posting this, it’s not just Thomas, it’s 5 out of 9 that seem to have taken bribes:
- Jane Roberts, who is married to Chief Justice John Roberts, made $10.3 million in commissions from elite law firms, whistleblower documents show Note: It’s not in the title, but he presided over one of their cases.
- Calls for Clarence Thomas Impeachment Vote After Report Exposes Billionaire-Funded Trips
- Kavanaugh accuser Ford testifies she ‘believed he was going to rape’ her & The Mystery of Brett Kavanaugh’s Baseball-Ticket Debt
- FBI interviewed individuals who accuse Amy Coney Barrett faith group of abuse
- Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor’s staff prodded colleges and libraries to buy her books
- Justice Samuel Alito Took Luxury Fishing Vacation With GOP Billionaire Who Later Had Cases Before the Court
- Law firm head bought Gorsuch-owned property
Thank you for this. Please keep posting it. This was my first time seeing it.
Yw, it was just starting to get spammy, I think I posted it 4 or 5 times in different ways.
Why wouldn’t it spark fears that he would easily take bribes? The practically untouchable nature of his position means he’s in the perfect position to do so.
Uh… real talk: I’m sure all his complaints about money did was to catch the interest of some rich people who were more than happy to enable the Supreme Court justice’s ongoing unsustainable lifestyle.
Fears he would resign? Bring it on lol.
That’s the trick. Conservatives didn’t want him to leave, so they stepped in with a bunch of gifts so he would stay, and then owe them favors too.
That’s a bingo
A key problem here is that it’s much harder to get a bribery conviction in the US than most other first-world countries; you need to actually demonstrate the intent for quid pro quo, not that that the rich are shoveling money at an official.
Certainly the solution is less avocado toast
Never too late to learn a trade.
It’s a good thing people with cases before the Court paid him not to!
-Republicans who think a judge giving $20 to Biden’s campaign is corruption.
