@fell@ma.fellr.net After using unix (mostly not linux!) for 10 years I found that I just knew it and always got it right. I haven’t had to think about ln in the last 20 years - my fingers just work. I guess that is one advantage to getting older/wiser. (I’m just hoping I don’t get cognitive decline like so many do, though probably I wouldn’t for 20-30 more years)

The left has their own fascist tendencies that are just as bad as the right. At different times different sides are in power and implement their version which their side supports because it is their side. You have to be willing to be critical of your own side. Make it a point to vote for someone not your sides candidate every election just because choosing that other person is a good exercise. (In my case I’ve just decided nobody gets more than two terms in office). Note that I didn’t say other side, there are always “fringe” parties on your side that you can vote for. the important part is you look for reasons why your own side is evil and take action to prevent it even if that means the opposite side gets power and does things you don’t like.

Maybe. I have millions of lines of c++ and making rust work with them will often be more work than just implementing the feature in c++

As a C++ developer Rust’s borrow checker is very interesting - it promises to solve my issues with C++ without the issues that make other languages (ie Java, Python…) have in the real world. (remember we choose C++ for a reason, Java isn’t correct for our application - if Java is correct you should use that instead)

While it does cost $$$ to run those plants, those plants make a lot of water and so the low price they pay is still reasonable.

Which is to say their insane profits don’t harm you at all. (if you were worried about it you would get a cheap refillable water bottle yourself and fill from you local tap water.

There are a number of jobs that count various community contributions in your review. This is a very large topic - write a paper in a major journal, give a speech at a conference, submit high profile bug reports - you can get a large raise for it. (the worry of course is that you get a reputation and thus someone gives you a great offer so if they want to keep you they better pay enough that you won’t leave). Exactly what gets you those promotions/raises isn’t clear in part because they need flexibility for someone who honestly discovers a new way to get that reputation and thus they have to give them a promotion. People who don’t deserve the promotion see the policy in place and look for ways to cheat themselves to a promotion they don’t deserve.

Watching sports is a useful activity when you confined to a hospital bed for a month or two as has happened to people I know. In one case they wouldn’t be allowed to game, even sports were in danger of being too exciting for their condition.

Watching someone cut a dovetail by hand is a lot more interesting now that I know from experience how hard it is. And maybe I’ll learn a trick to make my next ones better.

I can only watch so much football as can a rare other people like me. If I am watching football I want the view of one position. I don’t care that the quarterback got sacked on the play, how did the running back avoid the defense in his attempts to become open for a pass - or some such that I want to emulate when I next play. (i think that is a likely thing - I consider football too dangerous to play so I’m guessing - in reality I’d prefer to see other sports that I’m likely to play)
