  • you’ve got something connected that’s triggering the prompt, and kde on wayland issue is making it pop up over and over again. i think this one is as old as plasma 6 itself is.

try disconnecting all unnecessary input devices when playing. just usb mouse and keyboard. wireless is fine if it uses its own non-bt dongle.

or if it won’t open up a different can o’worms, switch to x11 for gaming sessions.

  • when gramma’s house got wired for internet last summer, we were able to dump the mobile hotspot she was using at home for internet (which was practically unusable because the signal there is basically non-existent the last few years) to get our bill “down” to “only” $130. 3 handhelds and an adapter thing you can connect normal phones to. a whole 8 or 10gb of pooled data included in that. vzn is really generous here.

it’d be $46 with these guys for the same lines and gigs ($36 total a month for the handhelds, and $120 a year for the adapter), but we might have to get new gear all around except for mine (volte flipper bought at retail, unlocked and supposed to work with all three carriers). i like that new feature where we can try the carriers out and easily switch a line (or all) from one to another if one isn’t working where we need it to.

what does the cid come up as when calling a landline with name&number cid? just ‘wireless’ and number or somesuch like some cell phones, the billing name (like others–what we don’t want. we use a line as a business line), or can you customize the names that show up with the number?

  • i’ve only ever had 'dumb’phones because the lowest cost is most important to me. everybody’s needs are different. your issues with them are all ‘non issues’ for me.

i just get by as i always have. work and home for the internet (and i’m rarely far from either), a book when i’m out for extended periods instead of doom scrolling at every idle moment, and i don’t do any ‘personal business’ online–at all. about the only thing i ‘miss out’ on is ‘app exclusive’ deals at stores and restaurants and things like that. nbd.

i do work on other people’s 'smart’phones regularly (software, interoperability, configurations, etc), even though i’ve never had my own.

if i still lived in the city (haven’t in over 20 years), i would probably have a cheap one, though–mainly for transit schedules and such. varying from your daily routine was always a pain with pocket schedules.

    for the cards…

sandisk extreme ($139 at bby) is a good choice. the switch-licensed card is the same price, and i think it’s the same card inside. the switch one also has a discount for bbyplus members (look on bby site for that).

the samsung pro plus costs a bit less and works well, too ($89 at bby).

for where to get them, safely…

buy in-store (or online for immediate pickup) from a major (b&m) retailer to avoid the potential problems with amazon’s co-mingled inventory.

  • but then they have to keep that data–and you just know they keep all those passwords. (support call… q:i dunno what the password is/can’t read the sticker. a:gimme x or y off your unit, and i’ll look it up for you).

but if they do it programmatically, all they’d need is the code to recreate any password if given the constant used to create it (the ssid or mac or sn, for instance).

hopefully they would use something that can’t be obtained off the wifi broadcast, like the sn on the unit.

  • best thing is to never hook 'em up to the internet. provided the manufacturers don’t all start requiring internet to ‘set up’ a tv.

next best thing would be a revert of firmware or a full ‘reset’ of settings; if possible. to return it to an ‘out of box’ state–then above, never connect it to the internet.

replacing a cheap streaming device is a hell of a lot cheaper than replacing the tv once the software gets obsoleted for whatever reason.

my coworker (and boss, technically) just casually mentioned that her inlaws ‘updated’ their tvs when they were visting over the holidays. i cringed so fucking hard because i have the same model, just smaller–so i know what happens.

they had just recently hooked-up wireline internet and could actually stream stuff now… so i had just given them a new streaming stick to use instead of connecting their now 3 year old tv to the wifi.
