Original movies are still being made, they just all moved to streaming services since they aren’t as profitable as IP-based films.
Seeing these numbers, I can see why studios have been pivoting to digital post-COVID, as they don’t have to spend as much money sending their films to theaters, and they get a much larger percentage of the digital sales compared to box office gross.
This graph represents three out of four ways to write ¾.
Phew, you had me worried there.
He’s a pinball wizard.
The Genie, obviously.
What you’re describing is called a “mid-budget movie”, and you’re right that there doesn’t seem to be much of them nowadays.
does being based on a book count?
Yes, The Wild Robot is technically an IP owned by the author Peter Brown.
People on the Internet often say that they want more original movies, but the box office proves that this isn’t always the case.
This is why Hollywood keeps making sequels, reboots, and adaptations, because they make more money than original movies.
And for that matter, original movies are still being made - they’ve just skipped theaters and moved to streaming (again, because they’re not as profitable as preexisting IP).

The light is taking them to pieces.
I don’t think piracy has that big of an effect on box office.
Most people don’t know how to pirate properly and are too afraid of “viruses” and navigating file systems to do it.
If piracy really were that big of a problem, they wouldn’t be doing this.
Yeah, it boggles me why Universal would do this. It feels like they’re leaving money on the table.
Maybe it’s not performing as well as they’d hoped?
As someone who was eagerly anticipating this movie and saw it in theaters, it’s a shame that it ended up having a terrible box office gross. I thought it was really good, and I appreciated the fact that I got to see 2D animation on the big screen again.
I think the best-case scenario for Rohirrim is that it blows up on streaming and digital.
